Go love without the help of any Thing on Earth

Dear friends in Christ,

The Angel that presided ‘oer my birth
Said, “Little creature, form’d of Joy and Mirth,
“Go love without the help of any Thing on Earth.”
– from William Blake’s Gnomic Verses

One of the striking features of Revelation is the prominence of angels. The vision of Saint John the Divine includes many of these heavenly beings, “ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands.” On Sunday, November 20, Dr. Robert Duvall expands our study of angels beyond the Bible in a special class, Angels in Revelation and other poetry. Poets to be considered range from John Donne to John Milton, from Emily Dickinson to Denise Levertov, as well as Blake. No previous reading is required. The class begins at 10 a.m. on the fifth floor of the parish house.

The End: Reading Revelation Theologically continues on Sunday, November 27, with a study of the “Great Tribulation,” found in chapter 8 of Revelation.

The Friday Bible Study led by Father Spurlock resumes today, November 18. As of this afternoon, the group has been meeting for one year, and they have just passed the halfway point of the gospel of Luke. Celebrate with them at 12:45pm in the parish house dining room.

The Christian Doctrine II class meets again in December.

Looking forward: on Sunday, December 11, Saint Thomas welcomes the Rt. Rev. Michael Lewis, Bishop in Cyprus and the Gulf. More information to follow.

The Fall Theology Lecture offered by the Very Rev. Dr. Andrew McGowan, Dean and President of Berkeley Divinity School at Yale University, was a stimulating evening of insights about the different ways that the notion of sacrifice is described in the Old and New Testaments. If you missed the lecture, or would like to revisit it, please know that the audio of Dean McGowan’s lecture is available online on the Saint Thomas website. If you’d like to read more from Dean McGowan, he blogs regularly at Saint Ronan Street Diary and his sermons from Good Friday at Saint Thomas are online as well.

Yours in Christ, Joel
