Haydn’s The Creation oratorio

Thursday, October 27, 2016
7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

“Imagine an oratorio with the awesome intricacy of Bach’s Mass in B minor yet the sublime contentment of Mozart’s Magic Flute, and you will have some idea of The Creation. The New York Times.

Advanced ticketing for this performance is now closed. Tickets will be available for purchase at the Fifth Avenue entrance beginning at 6:30pm.

In his first concert appearance with The Saint Thomas Choir of Men and Boys, incoming Director of Music Daniel Hyde opens the 16-17 season with The Creation oratorio by F. J. Haydn.

Following a performance of Handel’s Israel in Egypt in Westminster Abbey in 1791, Haydn was fired up to write his own oratorio on a similarly large-scale biblical theme. This performance will be sung in English. The music displays Haydn’s unfussy optimism and is arguably some of the most memorable and life-enhancing music ever to have been written.
